About Commonwealth Fusion Systems

An MIT spinoff. Building commercial fusion power plants based on a tokamak with high-temperature superconducting magnets. The SPARC device is set to demonstrate net energy gain, to be followed by the commercial ARC plant.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is a US fusion energy company spun out of MIT in 2018, headquartered in Devens. It builds power plants based on the tokamak — a donut-shaped device that confines plasma with a magnetic field. Its key innovation is high-temperature superconducting magnets, which make the reactor several times more compact than earlier designs; a 20-tesla magnet was successfully tested in September 2021. The SPARC demonstration device in Devens is roughly 80% complete and is expected to produce more energy than it consumes for the first time in 2027. It will be followed by the 400 MW ARC plant in Virginia, half of whose output has already been contracted by Google. The company has raised $4 billion in total, with the most recent round — $1 billion — closed in July 2026.
