About KoBold Metals
Searches for copper, lithium, nickel, and cobalt using AI models on digitized geological data. Its main asset is the Mingomba copper deposit in Zambia, where construction of a mine began in spring 2026, and it conducts lithium exploration in Congo.
KoBold Metals is an American company that searches for copper and lithium deposits using machine learning, founded in 2018 in Berkeley. KoBold's models found 247 million tons of ore with a copper content of 3.64% at the Zambian Mingomba deposit, according to the company's internal assessment; in April 2026, together with the state holding company ZCCM-IH, the company began constructing a 1.7 km deep mine there, costing $2.3 billion. The site was abandoned by Anglo American back in the 1960s: KoBold entered in 2022, digitized archives, and drilled over 150 km of boreholes. In Congo, the company obtained 14 licenses for the Manono lithium deposit and will invest over $50 million by early 2027. A Series C round of $537 million led by Durable Capital took place at a valuation of $2.96 billion, with a total of over $1.2 billion raised.

Key highlights
- Zambia, a plot, abandoned in the 1960s. Anglo American flooded a mine here, and in 2017 EMR Capital bought 80% of the Lubambe mine for $97 million, which owned the site. KoBold entered in 2022, digitized the archives and drilled more than 150 km of boreholes.
- Congo Lithium on disputed territory. In July 2025, the government signed a preliminary agreement with KoBold for the Manono lithium deposit and issued 14 licenses. Before early 2027, the company will invest more than $50 million, but the rights to Manono are disputed by the Australian side — this is the main legal risk of the project.
- First freight client of the Lobito Road. In December 2024, the African Finance Corporation named KoBold an anchor client for the railway from Zambia to the port of Lobito in Angola. The memorandum records a volume of no less than 300 thousand tons of copper and associated cargo per year.
