About Lightmatter
Designs photonic chips and interconnects — the Passage line and the Guide light engine — replacing electrical signal transmission in AI data centers to improve bandwidth and power efficiency in large GPU clusters.
Lightmatter is a leading developer of photonic interconnects for AI data centers. The bottleneck in AI infrastructure has shifted from compute to moving data between compute nodes: clusters have grown to hundreds of thousands of accelerators, networking is moving from 400G to 1.6T, and at these speeds copper runs into physics — the signal holds for only about a meter, and every bit costs energy. The company embeds optics directly under the processor package: the Passage L200 runs at 3 pJ/bit versus 5-8 for copper NVLink and 10-20 for pluggable optics, and a single chip replaces roughly 40 pluggable optical modules. Management estimates the platform cuts total AI infrastructure cost by about 25%. Industry records include 114 Tbit/s of optical bandwidth on the Passage M1000 chip and 1.6 Tbit/s per fiber. In June 2026 the company joined the NVIDIA NVLink Fusion ecosystem, and on August 13 it led a coalition of 19 companies (Dell, Qualcomm, Foxconn, Celestica, Flex, Keysight) within the Open Compute Project writing the industry standard for co-packaged optics; manufacturing is backed by partnerships with GlobalFoundries, ASE, Amkor, and GUC. The latest round was a $400M Series D at a $4.4B valuation, led by T. Rowe Price; the valuation hasn't been revised since October 2024. Against a planned $372M in 2026 revenue, that's 11.8x revenue — cheaper than every private peer in the sector (Ayar Labs trades at 38-75x). The expected exit is $25B on a 2029-2030 horizon, 5.7x the latest round.
