About Altos Labs
Develops partial cellular reprogramming that restores a youthful gene expression pattern to treat age-related diseases. Launched in 2022 with $3 billion in investor commitments, CEO Hal Barron from GSK, approximately 550 employees in the US and UK.
Altos Labs is an American-British biotechnology company, launched in January 2022 in Redwood City with an industry-record $3 billion in investor commitments. It focuses on cellular reprogramming: cell rejuvenation as a way to treat kidney, liver, heart, and lung diseases, which share a common cause — the aging of the cells themselves. The company is led by former GSK head of research Hal Barron and Hans Bishop, who sold Juno to Celgene for $9 billion; it has about 550 employees, and among its directors and advisors are three Nobel laureates: Jennifer Doudna, Frances Arnold, and Shinya Yamanaka. In 2025, Dorian Therapeutics was acquired, and a paper on mesenchymal drift was published in Cell. There are no announced clinical programs yet.

Key highlights
- Kidneys: disease as accelerated aging. Kunya Zhang's group from Altos showed in Nature Aging that diseased kidney cells age epigenetically faster than healthy ones. This makes kidney disease a target for reprogramming.
- Patients: those with a weaker drift live longer. The Belmonte Group showed in Cell in 2025, using data from over 40 tissues and 20 diseases, that strong mesenchymal drift is associated with a worse outcome. A measurable marker emerges by which the effect of therapy can be evaluated.
- Donor organs: a short path to people. Klausner said in 2024 that old rat kidneys were treated for 45 minutes with a cocktail of factors. Treating an organ ex vivo is the fastest path to the clinic because it does not require administering the drug to the patient.
