Indigo Ag
Indigo Ag is an American company that pays farmers for storing carbon in their soil, founded in 2013 in Boston inside Flagship Pioneering, the firm that created Moderna. A farmer who stops tilling and plants cover crops builds up carbon in the soil; Indigo measures it, verifies it through an independent registry and sells the credits to corporations, passing 75% of the revenue to the farmer. Since 2018, 8 million acres in 28 states have joined its programs, and 2.1 million tonnes of CO₂e have been removed or avoided. Credit issuance grows with every harvest: 163,000 in February 2024, 630,000 in April 2025 and 1.1 million in February 2026. In 2026 the company split into three parts, and the carbon business stayed under the Indigo brand. It has raised $1.37 billion in total.
Key highlights
Where Indigo Ag stands today across technology, financials and market traction.
Microsoft: from a trial to a 12-year contract.
In 2024 the corporation bought 40,000 tonnes, and in 2025 60,000 tonnes from what was then the largest credit harvest. In January 2026 it signed a contract for 2.85 million tonnes, one of the first soil carbon credit deals under the ICVCM quality label.
Walmart and Kellanova: rice in Arkansas.
Over four years of work with rice suppliers for the Great Value brand, emissions fell by 37,000 tonnes of CO₂e, and 11 billion gallons less water was used. In November 2025 Kellanova joined the program, and farmers receive a premium for every pound of rice.
Ohio: the state pays farmers through Indigo.
In June 2026 the state's Department of Agriculture brought Indigo into the H2Ohio program. More than 3,200 Ohio farmers already use the program's practices and will receive additional payments through the company.
