About Anchorage Digital

First in the USA crypto bank with a federal OCC license: custody, trading, lending, and stablecoin issuance for institutions. Custodian of BlackRock's Bitcoin and Ethereum funds, issues USAT for Tether and USDPT for Western Union.

Anchorage Digital is the first federal crypto bank in the USA, founded in 2017 in San Francisco, operates under OCC supervision. It stores crypto assets for BlackRock and Grayscale exchange-traded funds, and from 2025, it issues stablecoins — for five brands already, including Tether, Western Union, and Ethena. Clients receive custody, trading, settlements, and dollar accounts in one bank. In April 2025, BlackRock made Anchorage the second custodian for IBIT funds, previously, Coinbase was the sole custodian; in May 2026, Western Union launched USDPT on the Solana blockchain through the bank. In February 2026, Tether invested $100 million at a valuation of $4.2 billion, with a total of approximately $590 million raised.

Key highlights

  1. BlackRock made the bank the second custodian of IBIT. Until April 2025, Coinbase was the sole custodian of BlackRock's Bitcoin and Ether funds. A second custodian for the largest asset manager is both volume and a referral for other ETF issuers.
  2. Tether went from client to shareholder. Tether chose Anchorage as the issuer of USAT, its stablecoin for the American market, and then invested $100 million in the bank. The client, who became a co-owner, secures the issuance for the platform long-term.
  3. Western Union transfers money to USDPT. In May 2026, Western Union launched bank-issued USDPT on the Solana blockchain. This is Anchorage stablecoins' expansion beyond the crypto market — into classic money transfers.
