About Whatnot

Whatnot was founded in 2019 in Los Angeles by Grant LaFontaine and Logan Head, and the company went through the Y Combinator accelerator. LaFontaine sold Pokémon cards since childhood, then worked as a product manager at Facebook and a product marketer at Google. Head sold his service Fight Club to the sneaker marketplace GOAT.

Whatnot is an American live auction platform, founded in 2019 in Los Angeles. Sellers of cards, sneakers, and apparel conduct broadcasts, while buyers bid for lots in real time; sales exceeded $8 billion in six months, and 650 thousand new buyers join every week. Large second-hand clothing online store ThredUp began broadcasting directly from its distribution centers in Atlanta and Dallas and is discussing access to its inventory for other fashion sellers. A new pricing scheme, where commission decreases with increasing turnover, doubled a participant's monthly sales in the pilot and has been active for everyone since September. Geography is expanding: the number of Irish people buying on the platform every month has grown almost fivefold in two years. Series G closed in August 2026 at a valuation of $20 billion, with a total of approximately $1.5 billion raised.
